Vero: Everything you need to know about the social app going viral

Next-gen social platform and GQ partner Vero has exploded in popularity. Here’s everything you need to know about the app that’s breaking the internet

Avid GQ readers might well have noticed the multiple references to “Vero” littered across our website in recent months. We officially partnered with Vero back in October 2017, to bring our readers specially commissioned content via the the next-gen social platform and to give the GQ audience next-level access into our universe with a focus on music and its related culture.

But just this weekend, the rest of the internet finally caught up. Over the past few days, everyone from Forbes and the Independent to the* Daily Mail* and the Sun have run stories on Vero. The tsunami of sign-ups has been so intense that the platform - ordinarily slick, efficient and without any glitches or bugs whatsoever - has been suffering from the sheer volume of interest, with a few technical difficulties being notices by new users. But they won’t last very long. Their developers are working on making everything run smoothly as the community keeps swelling in size. At the time of writing, Vero is the No.1 free app on the app store, not only outranking all other social media networks, but also the likes of WhatsApp and YouTube.

Influencers and followers alike are flocking to the platform, which is giving its first one million users the chance to sign up for free. For those who join the party that little bit too late, there’ll be a small subscription fee for joining, because Vero (unlike most of its social-media peers) makes absolutely no money off advertising. There are no ads, no algorithms, no targeting and consequently they do not mine any of your data. In our era of “fake news”, it’s all about making social media easier and about bringing the experience closer to real life. You can toggle your audience size to choose what you share with who and your feed is organised chronologically, so that you can see posts from the people you connect with. Apple Music and Google Maps are both integrated into the platform, and the versatile posts types cover film and TV, books, places, music and links. As GQ's Editor Dylan Jones summed up, the “platform’s designed to make sharing what we love simpler.”
